Late Goal Falls Short in 2-3 Loss to Wildcats

TACOMA – Jackson Smith and Rhys Foote each scored a goal, but the Puget Sound Loggers dropped a 3-2 decision to Linfield in a Northwest Conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Baker Stadium.

The result left the Loggers with a 4-3-1 overall record, 3-2-0 in the NWC. Linfield improved to 1-8-1 overall, 1-4-1 in conference play.

How it Happened
Linfield jumped on top just 12 minutes into the game. Sam Haynes took a crossing pass in the middle of the field about 30 yards up from the goal, took it into the box, got around a defender, and drilled it into the back of the net from the penalty spot.

The Loggers tied it 3½ minutes later. A Linfield defender casually had the ball on his foot at the top right corner of his own penalty area. Jackson Smith zoomed in, knocked the ball off the defender's foot, took two dribbles and sent his hard shot into the back left corner from 14 yards away at the 15:38 mark.

Haynes converted a penalty kick for Linfield five minutes into the second half for a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, UPS had a chance to equalize with a PK of its own after Sebastian Telles was taken down in the box. Rhys Foote's try had the Wildcats goalkeeper beat, but the ball rose, nicked the crossbar and went over the top.

Danny Paz gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage with just 3:40 left in the game. Then at the 2:48 mark, action was halted for nearly 15 minutes while an injured Linfield player received medical attention. Just 13 seconds after it resumed, a Wildcats player was whistled for hand ball in front of the left goalpost. This time, Foote drilled his PK into the back left corner.
