Box Score 2 NEWBERG, Oregon – Andrew Matsueda came out of the bullpen to shutdown George Fox to lead the Puget Sound baseball team to a 6-5 win in extra innings against the Bruins Saturday afternoon. This season, the second game of doubleheaders are slated for seven innings. The Loggers won it in the eighth inning.
Matsueda entered the game in the sixth inning, when the Loggers trailed 5-2. He worked the final three innings of the game, allowed only one hit, and stuck out five.
Down by three entering the seventh inning, Kyle Strash, Jake Briscoe, and Dylan Joyce hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Jack McCullar grounded out but scored Strash, and then Shane Himeda made it a one-run game when he singled home Briscoe.
The next batter, Mitchell Nabeta, tied it up with a sac fly that allowed Joyce to touch home.
At the start of the eighth inning, Cody Hirano was placed on second base, and he moved to third on a bunt single by William Gross. Jackson Bolitho then lifted a sacrifice sly to plate Hirano for what stood as the game-winning run.
Joyce and McCullar finished the game with three hits, each, while Strash and Gross collected a couple of hits.
Puget Sound 3, George Fox 4
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Clayton Waltz hit his second home run of the season, but the Bruins scored three runs in the seventh inning en route to a 4-3 win.
Waltz belted a solo home with two outs in the second inning, giving the Loggers a 1-0 lead.
Tied 1-1 entering the fifth inning, Puget Sound pushed two runs across the plate. Cody Hirano and William Gross reached base with singles, and Kyle Stash drove them both home with a double to centerfield.
Davis Miller pitched seven innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out five.
The Loggers return home, April 10-11, to host Pacific Lutheran for four games.
