TACOMA, WashingtonIan Hughes and the Puget Sound baseball team opened their three-game home series against George Fox with a walk-off victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Bruins were victorious in the second game of the afternoon.

Puget Sound 8, George Fox 7

George Fox (17-12, 10-7 NWC) claimed a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Loggers (13-15, 10-10 NWC) didn't trail for long. Ryan Moyes led off the home half of the eighth inning with a single and moved into scoring position following a Ben Jones sac bunt. A wild pitch moved Moyes 90 feet from home, and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed the tying run to score.

Puget Sound kept the Bruins off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth, and Nickolas Alarcio began the bottom of the stanza with a walk. Following a sac bunt by Chris Zerio, Nick Funyak was given a free pass. Nathan Backes then drew a walk to load the bases for Hughes.

Hughes delivered with a walk-off single through the right side, giving Puget Sound the series-opening win.

Jones' three-run homer in the second inning erased a 1-0 deficit for the Loggers. Funyak also homered - a solo shot in the fifth inning – to bring the Loggers to within 5-4.

Kian Kurokawa earned the win for Puget Sound after striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Puget Sound 6, George Fox 11

The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. The Loggers trailed, 10-1, before posting five runs in the sixth inning.

Nickolas Alarcio began the bottom of the sixth with a single to center, and Chris Zerio followed with a single of his own. A fielding error allowed Nathan Backes to reach base as Alarcio scored on the play. Ian Hughes, who carried over a hot bat from game one and hit a solo homer in the fifth, smacked a two-run single through the left side.

Matt Shelhammer delivered a two-run single of his own to cap off the five-run rally.

The series' rubber match is on Sunday, April 3, at 12 p.m. Puget Sound will honor its senior student-athletes and their families prior to the game's first pitch.
