Cherniske's Game-Winner Give Loggers Split With No. 22 George Fox

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – For the second straight week, the University of Puget Sound baseball team split a doubleheader with a top-25 team. On Saturday, the Loggers (12-12, 10-4 NWC) split with No. 22 George Fox thanks to Nick Cherniske's game-winner. The Loggers took the first game 6-5 before the Bruins (19-8, 10-7 NWC) exploded for a 10-2 win in the nightcap.

"I think we have proven that we can compete with anyone if we can play consistent defense," said head coach Brian Billings. "In the first game, the ball bounced our way a couple times and we were able to take advantage and capture the momentum."

Game 1 – W, 6-5

With the game tied at 5-5 in the ninth inning and the bases loaded, Cherniske promptly knocked a single into left center field to plate the winning run. The walkoff hit gave the Loggers their second walkoff of the season.

The Loggers took full advantage of two Bruin errors in the ninth inning to capture the come-from-behind win. Jeff Walton scored on the second error of the inning. Dakota Resnik's chopper up the middle was mishandled by the pitcher, allowing Walton to score. Cherniske delivered the game-winner in the next at-bat.

George Fox had built a 3-0 lead over the first five innings. Sam Stahl delivered RBI-singles in the first and third innings to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Dan Winterstein homered for a 3-0 Bruin lead.

The Loggers finally broke through in the sixth with four runs on two hits and three Bruin errors. Will Mentor cashed in the Loggers first two runs with a RBI-single into center field. Casey Coberly later scored on an error to tie the game at 3-3. Christian Carter completed the scoring when he came home on a wild pitch for a 4-3 Logger lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Bruins manufactured two runs without recording a hit to reclaim the lead 5-4, which set the stage for the Loggers' ninth inning dramatics.

Cam Duvall picked up the win, tossing 2.2 innings of relies and allowing just one Bruin hit.

Game 2 – L, 2-10

Five runs in the top half of the fourth, gave the Bruins a sizeable 7-0 lead and led to a nightcap loss for the Loggers.

Already with a 2-0 lead, the Bruins broke the game wide open with five runs on six hits and one Logger error. Jay Kirchhofer knocked in two runs with an RBI-single to start the scoring. Winterstein added another run with a double down the right field line. Taylor Hunter and Stahl then delivered two more runs for a 7-0 Bruin lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Loggers answered back with a pair of solo homers. Jeff Walton homered to left center and Craig Driver followed a few batters later with a towering shot to left that banked off the tennis pavilion.

The Bruins added two more runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to secure the 10-2 win.

The Loggers and Bruins will square off in a rubber match tomorrow at 11 a.m.
