WALLA WALLA, Wash. - One day after outscoring their opponents
41-4, the Puget Sound Loggers outlasted the Whitman Missionaries,
4-2 and 5-3, to a sweep a season-ending Northwest Conference
baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Borleske Stadium in
Walla Walla, Wash.
In the first game, Whitman took an early lead with a run in the
bottom of the first as Whitman ace Pete Stadmeyer held the Loggers
offense at bay. Puget Sound finally got on the board in the
top of the fourth when Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep)
hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Travis Hernandez
(Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) from third.
The game, which was originally scheduled for seven innings,
stayed tied until the top of the ninth when Mentor singled down the
right field line to score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport)
from second. Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New
Mexico) then scored on a wild pitch to put the Loggers up by two
runs before Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) singled to
third base to score Matt Cox (Sale, More./South Salem) for a 4-1
Puget Sound lead.
Whitman added a single run in the bottom of the inning but it
wasn't enough to prevent the Loggers from collecting the
series-clinching victory. Cameron Duvall (Lakewood,
Wash./Lakes) (pictured right) collected the win, allowing two runs
on 10 hits with four strikeouts in nine innings pitched.
Stadmeyer took the loss for Whitman, allowing four runs on five
hits with eight strikeouts in eight and one-third innings
pitched.
In the second game, the Loggers got on the board first when Cox
singled through the left side in the top of the fourth to
score Rockey from third. Whitman added two runs in the bottom
of the inning to take the lead but after Devin Black (Evergreen,
Colo.) scored on an error to tie the game up, Rockey hit a
three-run home run to put the Loggers up 5-2. Whitman scored
one more time in the bottom of the sixth but the Loggers held on
for the 5-3 victory.
Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) collected his third win
of the season, allowing one run on two hits in two innings
pitched. Alex Baugh (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) collected
the save, pitching one inning of no-hit ball to end the game.
The Loggers conclude the season with a record of 16-23 overall
and 13-18 in NWC play.
