WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Scoring seven runs in their first
at-bat of the afternoon, the Puget Sounds Loggers slugged past the
Whitman Missionaries, 23-2 and 18-2, in a Northwest Conference
baseball doubleheader on Friday at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla,
Wash.
In the first game, the Loggers found themselves up by 10 runs
after just two innings and the offensive onslaught continued as
Puget Sound pounded out 23 runs on 19 hits to collect the big
victory. David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) was one of the
offensive stars for Puget Sound in the season opener, going
three-for-five with five RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Tim
Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) collected the win
for Puget Sound, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings
pitched with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. Peter Olson took the
loss for Whitman, allowing 15 runs on 13 hits in five innings
pitched with a walk and a strikeout.
In the second game, the Missionaries held a 2-1 lead after four
innings but the Loggers got two in the fifth, two in the sixth, six
in the seventh and seven in the eighth to collect the 16-run
victory. Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) was the star of game
two, going four-for-four from the plate with six RBIs and one run
scored. James Lane (Silverdale, Wash./Avila College) got the win,
allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in seven
innings pitched. Calvin Davis took the loss, allowing four runs on
five hits in five innings pitched.
The Loggers and Missionaries will conclude the 2009 season on
Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Borleske Stadium
in Walla Walla, Wash.
