SPOKANE, Wash. - - The Logger women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Whitworth University on Saturday morning. Despite the team loss, the Loggers avoided a sweep with a gritty performance from a rookie at the bottom of the singles lineup.
How It Happened
The morning began with a series of hard-fought doubles matches that saw the Loggers challenge the Pirates on every court. The No. 2 duo of Frances English and Nicole Wilson put together a gritty performance, staying within a single break of serve before falling 6-4. At the top, Kaylee Yamada and Pearl Buck traded heavy baseline rallies in a 6-3 battle, while Ginger Parker and Hannah Nejedly Welt dropped a 6-2 decision at the No. 3 spot.Â
The definitive highlight for the Loggers came at the bottom of the lineup. Meredith Friess put together a strong performance at the No. 6 spot, navigating a tight opening set to win 6-4. Once she found her rhythm, Friess took complete contol of the match, shutting out her opponent 6-0 in the second set to put the Loggers on the board.Â
The Loggers forced multiple marathons throughout singles play, making the Pirates earn every set. At No. 1, Yamada fought hard with her opponent, finding success with her service game in a 6-2, 6-3 contest. English followed at No. 2 with a high-intensity 6-2, 6-1 match, while Wilson and Buck displayed resolve in a 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 results, respectively. Parker rounded out the order at No. 5, showing great court coverage before Friess secured the Loggers' point in the finale.Â

The Loggers travel to Walla Walla tomorrow, March 8, for a Northwest Conference clash with Whitman College. First serve at the Whitman Tennis Courts is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
