SALEM, Ore. - - Logger softball kicked off Northwest Conference play with a split against Willamette University on Saturday, grinding out a 2-1 victory in the opener before dropping 6-2 in the second.
How It Happened
Game 1
The series opener began as a classic pitcher's duel, with both sides trading zeros through the first three frames. Lauren Perryman set the tone early, retiring the side in order in the first and navigating a lead-off walk in the second by inducing three straight flyouts. The Logger defense backed her up with a flawless performance, keeping the Bearcats off the scoreboard while the offense searched for a breakthrough.
That breakthrough finally arrived in the top of the fourth. Alyssa Waldo ignited the rally with a sharp single to center field, followed by an Olivia Boures walk to put two runners on. With one out, Nyomi Estrada put the ball in play to force a fielder's choice; a Willamette error on the throw allowed Waldo to slide home safely, giving Puget Sound the 1-0 lead.
The Loggers added a crucial insurance run in the sixth inning. Waldo once again sparked the offense with a lead-off base hit and quickly moved into scoring position. Estrada then delivered the hit of the game, a clutch RBI single into right field that brought Waldo home for the 2-0 lead.
Willamette refused to go quietly in the bottom of the seventh. The Bearcats managed to string together two hits and a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1 with two outs. With the tying run on base, Perryman remained unshakable. She dialed in to force a high pop-up to short, ending the threat and securing the win. Perryman finished the day allowing just one run one and four hits over seven innings of work.
Game 2
The momentum shifted in the second game as Willamette's bats woke up early. The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the second inning, capitalizing on a series of base hits and a Logger error. Puget Sound attempted to chip away in the fourth when Kylie Tanimura doubled deep to left-center, scoring Alyssa Figueroa to make it 3-1.
The Bearcats responded immediately with a three-run burst in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1. The Loggers refused to go quietly, as Estrada drove in another run in the sixth to cut into the deficit, but the comeback stalled there. Despite out-hitting the Bearcats in the first game, the Loggers struggled to find the gaps in the second game, resulting in the 6-2 final.
