Loggers Drop Game Three to Whitworth 7-5

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers drop their final game of the series against Whitworth, as the Pirates take game three 7-5.

How it Happened
Cal Johnson got the start on the mound for the Loggers, striking out his first two batters to get the Log rolling. He then walked and hit the next two batters, putting runners on first and second with two outs. A fly out to center capped the top of the inning, as Johnson escaped with no hits or runs. Charlie Deggeller led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, and after a Kellen Krebs double, the Loggers had two runners in scoring position. Ryan Spero grounded out to second, sending Deggeller home to make it 1-0 Loggers.

From there, the pitchers' duel began. Johnson gave up his first hit of the day in the top of the second, but kept the Pirates off the scoreboard. The Pirates returned the favor, as the Loggers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second. The Pirates scored an unearned run to tie the game in the top of the third, and both teams turned up blanks in the fourth to keep it 1-1.

The Pirates scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth, pulling ahead 3-1 and chasing Johnson out of the inning. Whitworth scored two more, making it a four-run ball game with 4.5 innings to play. The Loggers responded immediately, as Armand Lettiere hit a home run down the right line to make it 5-2. Whitworth responded with back-to-back solo home runs of their own, making it a four-run lead yet again.

Deggeller got on base with a single to right, and Krebs got his second hit of the afternoon in the sixth, blasting the Loggers' fifth home run of the weekend to make it a 7-4 ball game. After a scoreless seventh inning, Matt Churchill hit an opposite-field solo home run in the eighth to cut the lead to two. Zach Robman came in for two innings of relief, keeping the Pirates scoreless to turn it over to the offense in the bottom of the ninth.

Preston Crocket led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single, but the Loggers couldn't capitalize on the runner in scoring position. The Pirates take this one, 7-5.
