Loggers Fall Just Short Against Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Loggers drop their doubleheader to Warner Pacific and are set to prepare for their trip to California next weekend.

How it Happened
Game 1
Kara Miyoshi got the start in the circle for the Loggers, getting the first start of her collegiate career. After giving up a run, Miyoshi took down three of the next four batters to turn the inning over. She did well in the following inning, striking out two to keep the Knights off the scoresheet.

The Loggers got their first hit of the day in the top of the third, as Kat Avanzino singled to left field, advancing Alyssa Waldo to second following a walk. The Loggers couldn't capitalize, though, but started to get into a bit of a rhythm on offense. Alison Madia came in to pitch, letting in an unearned run in the bottom of the third. A single brought in another runner, as the Loggers found themselves down 3-0 after three.

Two more Loggers got walked to start the top of the fourth, but a pair of strikeouts left two stranded. Madia then struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, giving some momentum back to Puget Sound. Waldo got on base thanks to an error by the shortstop, and Avanzino got her second hit of the day to put two runners on. The Loggers fell just short yet again, leaving both runners on base.

After the Knights tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth, Alyssa Figueroa blasted the Loggers' first home run of the season to give the Loggers some hope. A Waldo single and a Kylie Tanimura walk put two runners on with no outs in the top of the seventh. The Loggers came up just short in game one, though as the Knights take this one 4-1.

Game 2
The Loggers got off to a hot start in game two, capitalizing on runners on base early. Waldo doubled to start the game, and a triple by Tanimura scored her on the next at bat. A sacrifice fly by Figueroa sent Tanimura home, but Nyomi Estrada got on base with a single to left field. Peyton Willing walked, and Macy Maxwell took full advantage. She singled to right field, sending Estrada home to go up 3-0.

Estrada then got the nod in the circle, walking one and taking care of the rest to close out the first inning. Avanzino kept her bat hot in game two, singling again in the top of the second. After Estrada took care of the bottom of the inning, she doubled to lead off the third. Elyssa Garcia singled to move Estrada over, but got caught stealing at second to end the inning.

The Loggers piled on more runs in the top of the fourth, as Tanimura tripled for the second time this game, sending Brenna Flannery home. Avanzino sent Tanimura home to make it 5-0 Loggers, giving them a comfortable lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Knights responded with two runs of their own, but a Kirstyn Scott single sent Maxwell home in the fifth to make it a four-run game. Avanzino sent another home with a sac fly, as the Loggers led 7-2 after five.

The Knights proceeded to put up 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, closing out the game. The Loggers tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning to pull one back, but the Knights took game two, 14-8.
