WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Loggers bounce back on Saturday, winning both games of their doubleheader against Whittier and taking the series.
How it Happened
Game 1
The Loggers jumped right into the action in game one, as
Matt Churchill walked,
Kellen Krebs singled, and
Cooper Allen sent Churchill home with an RBI double
Evan Moll then got the start on the mound, working his way out of a two-walk jam to keep the game at 1-0 Loggers. The Poets bounced back in the bottom of the second with an RBI single, though, making the game tight once again.
Puget Sound took back the lead immediately, loading the bases with no outs to start the inning. This forced a pitching change, which the Loggers took advantage of.
Ryan Spero singled to bring home two, and
Armand Lettiere followed that up with a sac bunt to move the runners into scoring position.
Ethan Nakamura then grounded out, but sent home a runner, and a Charlie Deggeler double made it an explosive four-run inning.
The Poets bounced back to make it 5-4 in the bottom of the third, and it stayed that way through the bottom of the sixth.
Ethan Rattie came in and pitched an absolute gem, going 3.1 innings with zero hits and no runs, all with only 44 pitches.
The Loggers got down to business in the top of the seventh, scoring an insurance run with a
Jim O'Brien sacrifice fly. Henry Eschilman jumped on the mound for the final three innings of work, also giving up no runs and no hits to close out the game
The Loggers closed out their scoring in the top of the ninth inning, putting up five more runs to put the game away.
Preston Crockett singled to bring a run home, Churchill scored thanks to an error, Krebs singled to bring home Crockett, and Allen scored two thanks to a single and an error by the center fielder. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the game, as the Loggers take this one, 11-4.
Game 2
The bats got hot early yet again, as the Loggers put up a run in the first inning in four straight games now.
Preston Crockett doubled, and
Kahiau Teruya brought him home thanks to an error on the Poet's shortstop.
Cal Johnson got the start on the mound in game two, going 1-2-3 in the first two innings to keep the poets scoreless.
The Loggers added onto their lead with an
Isaac Fendel single and a
Ryan Tobler sacrifice fly, making it 3-0 at the end of the third. The Poets struck next in the bottom of the fourth, but only one run came across the plate. Johnson went 5.2 innings, and left the sixth only allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run.
Zach Robman came into the game, getting a crucial out with the bases loaded to keep the score 3-1.
The Poets tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, setting up an instant classic. After Robman took care of business in the eighth, the Loggers turned on the jets yet again in the top of the ninth inning. A walk and an error put two runners on base with no outs for Puget Sound, bringing
Jonah Velasco up to the plate as a pinch hitter. A Velasco single to right field made it 4-3, as the Loggers loaded the bases. With two outs, Deggeller doubled to left field, clearing the bases and giving the Logs a 7-3 lead.
Despite a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, the Loggers take this one, 7-4 to win the series.
