McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- The Puget Sound Loggers opened their conference slate with a statement victory on Saturday, grinding out a 4-3 win on the road against Linfield.
How it Happened
Puget Sound set the tone early by taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. The duo of Kaylee Yamada and Pearl Buck dominated at No.1 doubles with a clean 6-0 sweep. At No.3 doubles, Zoe Richter and Ginger Parker provided the spark with a 6-2 victory to give the Loggers the early lead heading into singles.
While the top of the ladder faced tough battles, the Loggers' middle and lower seeds stepped up to bring the victory home. Nicole Wilson put on a show, rolling to a 6-4, 6-1 win. Buck at No.5 capped off a perfect day, following her doubles win, with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 singles victory. Meredith Friess remained composed under pressure, securing the fourth and final point for Puget Sound with a 6-1, 6-2 result.
"The team played strong tennis today," said head coach Matthew Simons. "The mental toughness showed and was the difference. I couldn't be more proud of them for the way they came together for their first match of the year on the road."
The Loggers ability to stay composed in a hostile road environment, proved to be the story of the day. By refusing to let the Wildcats back into any sets, Puget Sound finished the weekend on a high note and established themselves as a tough opponent in the conference.
