FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A wild, back-and-forth slugfest between Puget Sound and Pacific ended in heartbreak for the Loggers, who surrendered a two-run lead in the ninth inning and fell 15-14 this afternoon.
In a game that featured 29 runs, 29 hits, and 10 pitchers, the Loggers took a 14-13 lead into the bottom of the ninth before the Boxers (12-13) staged the final rally. With two outs and the bases loaded, Pacific delivered a two-run walk-off single to center field. The ensuing misguided throw led to two runners advancing home for the Boxers, securing the win.
Puget Sound had clawed back multiple times, erasing a 6-2 deficit with a seven-run surge between the fourth and sixth innings. The offense exploded for 15 hits on the day, with standout performances across the lineup.
Ryan Spero paced the Loggers with a 4-for-6 showing, notching an RBI and swiping two bases.
Kahiau Teruya went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the ninth.
Cody Hirano added three hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base.
Trailing 13-11 entering their final at-bat, Puget Sound mounted what looked to be a game-saving rally.
Matt Churchill's pinch-hit double sparked the inning, and consecutive hits by Murashige, Teruya, and Spero vaulted the Loggers back on top. But Pacific reliever Hayden Edwards (2-1) held firm to get the final out of the ninth before his team responded.
Lagatta was a force for the Boxers, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Pacific scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead, only for Puget Sound to answer with three in the ninth. The Loggers used eight different pitchers, with
Tucker Berg (0-1) taking the loss.
Defensive miscues plagued both squads, with six combined errors—two of them coming in Pacific's critical eighth inning.
The loss concludes the weekend series for Puget Sound, who will return to action this Friday at home, with first pitch versus Willamette slated for 3:00pm.
