FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A promising start for Puget Sound unraveled in the fourth inning, as Pacific (Ore.) erupted for seven runs to hand the Loggers a 7-5 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.
Puget Sound (3-2) jumped ahead with three runs in the third. Senior Kylee Tanimura delivered an RBI single, while
Aislind Dail followed with another base hit to drive in a run. The Loggers capitalized on a Pacific (Ore.) passed ball to add a third run.
But in the bottom of the fourth, the Boxers (1-2) broke loose. After a pair of walks, a single loaded the bases. Moments later, a wild sequence saw runs pour in, capped by a two-run double. By the time the dust settled, Pacific led 7-3.
Puget Sound fought back in the fifth, adding two runs.
Jazzy Allen singled and later came around to score, while a catcher's error allowed another run to cross. However, the Loggers couldn't push across anything more against Pacific's pitching, who struck out nine and went the distance for the win.
Nyomi Estrada (1-2) took the loss for Puget Sound despite striking out 10 in six innings. Allen finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
In the second game, a five-run fifth inning propelled Puget Sound past Pacific.
The Loggers (3-2) capitalized on timely hitting and a dominant pitching performance from
Alison Madia, who went the distance, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out three. Madia improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete-game victory.
Puget Sound wasted no time getting on the board.
Alyssa Figueroa's two-run single in the first inning gave the Loggers an early lead, scoring
Kylie Tanimura and
Aislind Dail. Pacific (1-3) responded in the second when an RBI single brought home a runner, but that would be the only run the Boxers could muster.
The Loggers broke the game open in the fifth.
Alyssa Waldo's leadoff walk set the table, and after a passed ball and an error, Puget Sound took advantage. Figueroa drove in another run, followed by an RBI single from
Mikayla Johnson. Kat Avanzino capped the rally with a two-run double to make it 7-1.
Dail led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Avanzino and Figueroa each finished with multiple RBIs. Tanimura added a double and a stolen base, contributing to Puget Sound's 11-hit effort.
Pacific's Colfelt (0-1) took the loss, surrendering seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits over six innings.
Puget Sound returns to action tomorrow, with another doubleheader against Pacific.
