Loggers Win Streak Ends With Five Set Thriller at PLU

TACOMA, Wash. — The Loggers' win streak comes to an end against Pacific Lutheran, dropping a five-set thriller 3-2.

How it Happened
Puget Sound started out strong, trading points with the Lutes early. The teams started to trade runs, as PLU scored four straight, and the Loggers bounced back with a 4-1 run of their own. Makela Pick got her first kill of the match, and a Samantha Keightley ace helped the Loggers stay in it. Randi Rush got in on the action, assisting two Maddie Badger kills and hitting a kill of her own to make it 14-12.

Pacific Lutheran got right back in the match, and all of a sudden it was tied at 19 apiece. A 4-0 Logger run stopped the Lutes in their track, as they put themselves in a great position thanks to kills by Pick and Badger. Erin Fagan closed out the set with a kill, giving Puget Sound an early 1-0 lead.

The second set mirrored the first, as neither team had more than a four point lead the entire set. The Loggers started with a 4-1 run, as Fagan picked up an ace and a Kill during that span. Mackenzie Leith got in on the action, picking up a kill in an eventual 8-4 run. Another Fagan ace made it 15-12, but the Lutes weren't quite done. A 6-1 run gave PLU a 20-18 lead - their first of the set.

Puget Sound capitalized off a service error and a kill by Fagan, tying the set up at 20. In a wild back-and-forth battle, there were five lead changes to send it to extras. Another Lute service error and a kill by Mia Fedota sealed the deal, as the Loggers found themselves up 2-0.

Set three was also very competitive, but the Loggers jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. Fagan and Pick found the court, logging back-to-back kills to extend their lead to four. The largest lead of the set came when the Loggers went on another 4-1 run to make it 20-15, as a Keightley service ace put the team just five points away from victory. The Lutes crawled their way back, and ended up taking the set 28-26.

Up 2-1, the Loggers continued to battle. PLU took an early 8-2 lead, but the Loggers stormed right back into the match. Kills by Badger and Leith, as well as a couple of Lute attack errors helped the Loggers secure a 5-0 run to make it 7-8. A couple more attack errors and kills by Fagan and Pick gave the Loggers their first lead of the game, as they went on a 7-2 run to go up 16-13. The Lutes pulled it back again, forcing an extra point, as the Loggers dropped set four 26-24.

The fifth set started out in the Lutes favor, as they jumped out to a 5-3 lead. A little 3-0 run by Puget Sound was well-timed, as kills by Fedota and Leith, paired with a Rush ace, put the Loggers back on top. The Lutes found their way back into the match, forcing a Logger timeout down 12-10. The timeout proved successful, as Fagan had yet another ace to put the Loggers at set point. Four straight Lute points was the difference maker, though, as the Loggers droppe set five 16-14.
