WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Puget Sound captured the final game of the series against Whitman College with a convincing score of 7-1 on Sunday. Puget Sound held the Blues scoring at bay through eight innings with pitcher
Brett Harvey allowing only two hits on the day.
The Loggers were able to pick up its first run in the second inning when third baseman
Cooper Allen flied out to center field to bring home a runner from the RBI.
It wasn't until the fifth inning when Puget Sound struck again to increase its lead. With the bases loaded,
Brock Makishima placed a single to right field to bring in two runs. The Loggers were unable to advance the two runners left on base, but ended the inning up 3-0.
In the seventh inning, with two runners already on base, Whitman intentionally walked
Jack McCullar to load the bases. With Makishima reaching on a fielder's choice bringing home
Drew Kamihara, the Blues committed an error to allow
Makana Murashige to advance home.
Going into the eighth inning up 5-0, the Loggers again relied on runners getting on base with
Preston Crockett picking up a single. Two batters later, Whitman allowed Crockett to score from third off an error at first base. With runners at the corners, and only one out, Murashige flied out to center bringing in the second run of the innings to move the score to 7-0.
Whitman achieved its only run of the game off a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Harvey stopped any hopes of a Blues rally striking out two to end his complete game for the Loggers. Harvey had eight strikeouts on the day to move his record to 4-2.
Makishima led all loggers at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. Kamihara put up three hits and two walks on the day. Logger baserunning proved effective to help secure the win with four stolen bases. The win moves the Loggers record to 5-7 in Northwest Conference play and 13-15 overall.
Puget Sound returns home on April 13-14 for a three game series against Lewis & Clark College.
