TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers fell 15-3 to the Whitworth Pirates in the final game of a Northwest Conference baseball series on Saturday afternoon. The Loggers won the series, but fell to 11-13 overall and 3-6 in Northwest Conference, while the Pirates improved to 15-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
The Pirates saw six pitching changes from the Loggers which included nine earned runs across three pitchers. The Loggers put out 13 hits, despite their best efforts, Puget Sound struggled to contain Whitworth's offensive onslaught and were unable to mount a significant comeback.
The three-run first inning by Whitworth set the tone for the rest of the game as they steadily accumulated runs while maintaining a solid defensive stance. The top of the first inning saw Whitworth Universities Aidan Morrison setting the pace with a single to center field, followed by Elijah Tanner's walk. Henry Zaske's reach on an error allowed Morrison to score, giving Whitworth an early lead and putting pressure on the home team to respond.
Puget Sound attempted to rally in the bottom of the second inning, narrowing the score with two runs off a double ripped by Cody Hirano to right center for the double RBI. As the game progressed, Puget Sound found themselves unable to overcome Whitworth's dominance on the field. Despite flashes of offensive potential, they struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, while Whitworth continued to extend their lead.
As the game progressed, Whitworth's offensive prowess continued to shine, with key hits and strategic baserunning expanding their lead. Puget Sound struggled to contain Whitworth's momentum, facing difficulties in both their offensive and defensive strategies. The Loggers would score one more run in the 7th inning after three hits were made by Jake Comeaux, Travis Ujimori, and Sean Murphy, the inning would end in a groundout.
The Loggers finished with four errors, while the Pirates had none.
The Puget Sound baseball team will face Pacific Lutheran University in a make-up, non-conference match on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. on Logger Field.
