Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran completed the series sweep of the Puget Sound softball team with wins of 7-0 and 8-0 at Puget Sound on Wednesday. The two teams played four times over the past two days.
Game 1 – L, 0-7
PLU (21-11, 14-6 NWC) jumped on top early with a run in the first and another in the second. They were looking to do more damage with runners on second and third and one out but Montessa Califano's liner down the line was snagged by Amy Schmeckpeper, who stepped on third for a quick double play.
A triple from Kaaren Hatlen helped the Lutes take a 5-0 lead in the third but the Loggers looked to respond in the bottom half. Olivia Turner singled with one out and Jenica Holt later singled to put two on with two out. However, Leah Butters was able to induce an inning ending ground ball and keep the Loggers off the board.
Two runs in the sixth gave the Lutes their final tally with Butters going the distance in the circle to preserve the shutout. Megan Campbell also went the distance for the Loggers and struck out one.
Game 2 – L, 0-8 (6 inns.)
The Lutes took another early lead when Amanda Hall's double scored a run just three batters into the game. A perfect relay from Marissa Jeffers in right field to Chelsea Lindroth as the cutoff cut down Hall as she tried to stretch it into a triple.
The relay saved a run as Hatlen hit a towering homer in the next at-bat for a 2-0 Lute lead.
Amy Schmeckpeper led off the Loggers half with a single but was left on first. She was 2-for-3 in the second game with a pair of singles. Her second single extended the third inning and was followed by another single from Jenica Holt. With two on, the Loggers had their first scoring threat of the contest but Hatlen closed the door.
Olivia Turner had her scond hit of the day in the fifth and Brianna Huber doubled in the sixth but the Loggers were unable to scratch out a run as PLU took the run-rule victory.
After a three-run fourth put the Lutes up 6-0, they were looking to gain the run-rule advantage in the fifth. They loaded the bases with two outs but Megan Campbell worked her way out unscathed as Spencer Sherwin lined out to Jeffers in right to end the scare. However, Hatlen's double in the sixth scored the two necessary runs for the run-rule win.
The Loggers will remain home for their final eight games of the season. They host Pacific in a doubleheader on Saturday and Lewis & Clark on Sunday.
