Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team came up short on Sunday as Whitworth claimed three wins. The Pirates closed out the suspended game 11-2 before squeaking out a 6-4 win in game two and taking the third game 9-0.
Game 1 (continued) – L, 2-11 (5 inns.)
Whitworth rallied for five runs in he fourth before the rain delay and drove in four more when it picked up today to go up 10-2. The Pirates (11-10, 8-7 NWC) rallied for nine runs in total in the fourth inning to fuel the victory.
They added one more in the fifth before officially claiming the win.
Game 2 – L, 4-6
Both teams put up a three-run inning but the Pirates were able to scratch out a few more one-run innings to come away with the win. Taylor Jones went 2-for-3 for the Loggers (0-15, 0-11 NWC) for the second consecutive game and drove in a run.
Jamie Brunner's three-run homer put the Pirates up 3-0 in the first without an out being recorded. The Loggers got one back in the third when Lisa Colombo knocked Jenica Holt with a single.
Whitworth put up one more in the fifth and one in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Logger bats came to life. With Amy Schmeckpeper and Olivia Turner already aboard, Shannon Reed drove a liner into left center that rolled all the way to the fence. Both runners came around to score to bring the Loggers with two. Jones then knocked in Reed with a single into left and the Loggers were down 5-4 when the rally was shut down.
Heather Hesselgesser helped Whitworth respond with a run-scoring double in the seventh and Riley Fritz earned the save when she went back into the circle to retire the Loggers in order in the seventh.
Fritz had started the game but gave way to Megan Fisher, who earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief.
Game 3 – L, 0-9 (5 inns.)
The Pirates had a big sixth inning to propel them to a quick 9-0 win in the final game of the day. The Loggers managed just two hits in the game.
The Pirates went quietly in the first but exploded in the second. They had four RBI-hits in the inning and also pulled off a double steal to go up 6-0. Alyssa Martinez started off the scoring with an RBI-double and went on to go 3-for-3 in the game.
Martinez added a homer in fifth to put the Pirates up 8-0. Later in the inning, they squeezed in a run for the final tally.
The two teams will square off one final time tomorrow for the conclusion of the four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
