Box Score 2 PARKLAND, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team was shutout twice on Sunday by fifth-ranked Pacific Lutheran. The Lutes (34-10, 24-4 NWC) recorded 8-0 and 6-0 wins in the sweep of the season finale.
Game 1 – L, 0-8 (5 inns.)
The Lutes took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first on a double from Kaaren Hatlen. The Loggers (3-31, 3-25 NWC) threatened in the top of the second as Joleen Monfiletto reached on an error and Amy Schmeckpepper followed it up with a single into left. Elayna Van Hess then singled to load the bases but the Lutes were able to end the rally unscathed.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Loggers made two errors and the Lutes cashed in three runs to take the 5-0 lead. They added three more in the fourth to go up 8-0. Schmeckpepper singled in the Loggers half of the fifth but Stacey Hagensen was able to retire the side to hold on to the run-rule victory.
Game 2 – L, 0-6
The Lutes again got going early with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first. Katie Lowery's two-RBI hit gave the Lutes a 3-0 lead and was the only hit of the inning. The Lutes pushed one more run across in the second when Hatlen drew a bases loaded walk.
A Logger error in the fifth led to another run while Lowery singled in the Lutes final run in the sixth.
The Loggers had four scattered hits in the game. Marissa Jeffers doubled in the fourth with one out to pose a scoring threat. Schmeckpepper later walked to put two on with two outs but the side was retired before the Loggers could push a run across.
The Loggers ended their 2012 season on Sunday with a 3-31 overall record.
