Box Score 2 PARKLAND, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound softball team fell twice to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday 8-0 and 8-2. The Lutes (26-10, 20-4 NWC) combined for hot hitting and hot pitching for the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1 – L, 0-8
The Loggers (11-25, 9-17 NWC) managed just one hit against Lute's pitcher Stacy Hangensen as they fell 8-0 in five innings. Christina Demuelenaere recorded the Loggers only hit in the fourth inning and was the only Logger to advance to second base.
The Lutes took advantage of two free passes in the first for an only 2-0 lead. Kareen Hatlen's double got the Lutes on the board first.
Three of the Lutes eight runs were unearned thanks to three Logger miscues in the game. With a 3-0 lead in the third inning, the Lutes exploded for four runs on two hits and two Logger errors.
In the fifth, the Lutes took the run-rule victory after Jackie Martinez singled in the clinching run.
Game 2 – L, 2-8
The Loggers bats woke up, but it wasn't quite enough to take down the Lutes in the nightcap. The Loggers actually outhit the Lutes 7-6 in the game but the Lutes scored five unearned runs to take the victory 8-2.
The Loggers hung one run up on the board in the first when Carolyn Moore led off the game with a single and came around to score on another single by Chrissy Atterson. However, the Lutes responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to take the early 2-0.
Both Moore and Atterson had two hits in the game to lead the Loggers. Atterson's second hit tied the game up at 2-2 when she homered to center to lead off the fourth inning.
However, the Lutes tallied four unearned runs in the fifth to sprint away to a 6-2 lead. With two outs, a Logger error prolonged the inning and the Lutes took full advantage.
Hangensen knocked a two-RBI single to give the Lutes the lead and Hatlen followed it up in the next at-bat with a two-run homer for a 6-2 lead.
The Lutes tacked on two more in the sixth for the final advantage. Hagensen picked up her second win of the day in a relief appearance, sitting down the final seven Loggers in order. Auriel Sperberg took a tough-luck loss, allowing six hits and three earned runs while fanning five.
The Loggers will host Senior Day and "Strikeout Cancer" day on East Field tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
In addition to Senior Day festivities, the Loggers will be raising funds in support of the National Fastpitch College Association's annual "Strikeout Cancer" initiative.
