Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – With 8:55 remaining, Hannah Erikson gave the University of Puget Sound lacrosse team their first lead of the day at 9-8 and the Loggers (2-4) would hold on for a 12-9 victory over Carthage on Saturday. The Loggers scored seven consecutive goals to overcome a three-goal deficit.
After a hot start from the Lady Reds (1-4), the Loggers found themselves in a hole through a majority of the match. However, Julia Schulman scored the last of her team-leading five goals (all of which came in the opening half) at the 3:09 mark of the first half to open a Loggers scoring spree. Jessica McDonald then found the back of the net three seconds before the end of the half to bring the Loggers within one goal and steal the momentum.
The Loggers trailed by 4-0 before Schulman finally got the Loggers on the board nearly 11 minutes into the match. She went on to score the Loggers first three goal. The Loggers trailed 6-2 nearly at the midpoint of the first half after a goal Desirae Murphy. Hannah Sopeth put the Lady Reds up 8-5 with 3:34 left in the first half.
Sopeth's goal would prove to be the last Lady Red goal for over 32 minutes as the Loggers controlled the second half.
A little over a minute into the second half, McDonald scored her second goal of the day to draw the game even for the first time since the beginning of the game. Over the next 13 minutes, neither team could find the back of the net as tenacious defensive play forced a flurry of turnovers.
Erikson finally broke the silence at the 8:55 mark and Anna Gunderson added two more insurance goals at 3:32 and 2:00 marks to complete a seven-goal streak for the Loggers.
Anna Schweiss ended the drought for Carthage with a goal with 1:20 left, but it was too late for the Lady Reds to come back.
Anna Calciano made nine saves in the contest, including five in the second half to get the win. Andrea Renton put up a brick wall in the first half with 10 saves but took the loss while making 13 saves in the match.
The Loggers continue their lengthy homestand on Monday when they host Fontbonne at 6 p.m. on Lower Baker.
