PORTLAND, Ore. - The pitching duo of Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway,
Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) and Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent
Valley) combined for 14 strikeouts and no walks as the Puget Sound
Loggers swept the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 9-0 and 10-3, in a
Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday in Portland,
Ore.
In the first game, the Loggers got on the board in the top of
the second when Amelia Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) walked
to score Kelsey Scanlan (La Center, Wash./Clark CC). Megan
Janes (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) then cleaned off the bases with a
three-RBI double and Grause finished up the inning with a fielders
choice to score Janes and give the Loggers a 5-0 lead.
The Loggers added two more runs in the top of the third and then
another pair in the top of the seventh as Sperberg held the
Pioneers to just two hits with eight strikeouts in seven scoreless
innings pitched to collect the 9-0 win.
In the second game, the Loggers struck first once again as
Victoria Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) singled to center to score
Grause and Janes and give Puget Sound a 2-0 lead. The Loggers
made it 3-0 in the top of the third when Raeburn singles again to
score Janes but the Pios tied it up in the bottom of the third.
The Loggers retook the lead in the top of the fifth when
sophomore Carolyn Moore homered to center field for a 4-3 Puget
Sound lead. Puget Sound blew the game open in the top of the
sixth with three runs to push the lead to 7-3 and a three-run home
run by Scanlan in the seventh gave Puget Sound the 10-3 victory.
Grause collected the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with
six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
The Loggers will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they
